Overview
Carl Basamania, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who is an internationally recognized expert in shoulder replacement surgery and the treatment of clavicle fractures. He performed the first reverse total shoulder arthroplasty in the US in 2003 and continues to perform over 500 shoulder surgeries each year. He also helped develop an innovative, minimally invasive technique for repairing both new and poorly healed clavicle fractures which significantly decreases complications and greatly improves patient outcomes. He has found that pain control and rapid recovery go hand in hand, so he does everything imaginable to reduce a patient’s pain. This speeds recovery and provides better results in the long run, which helps his patients get back to doing the things they love.
During his career in the US Military, Dr. Basamania was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC where he was named Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and worked with the Army’s Delta Force as their designated orthopedic surgeon. In addition to multiple military decorations, he has been the only physician in the military to receive both the Surgeon General’s Physician Recognition Award and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Physician Recognition Award. After 24 years in the military, he moved to Duke University where he was named Chief of Reconstructive Shoulder Surgery and Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the Durham VA Medical Center. After a decade with the Blue Devils, he returned to the Pacific Northwest.
Dr. Basamania and his wife, whom he met while both were in the military, live in the greater Seattle area. They have three grown children. In his spare time, Dr. Basamania enjoys playing guitar. Although he studied classical guitar under Stanley Watson when he was younger, he currently tries as best he can to emulate the blues style of Joe Bonamassa.
