Orthopedic doctors and surgeons are physicians who care for your musculoskeletal system, which includes your bones, joints, ligaments, nerves, and tendons. They specialize in diagnosing and treating injuries that commonly occur from sports or physical activity. They use a variety of tools to diagnose you, including X-rays, CT scans, ultrasound, and MRI. Though orthopedists are familiar with the entire musculoskeletal system, physicians will often specialize in specific parts of the body, so a treatment involving both the ankle and the back could require two separate doctors.
